Battling back against deadly opioids in Nueces county

According to Texas Health and Human Services there were 1,174 opioid related deaths in Texas in 2015. 36 of those deaths occurred in Nueces County. The Coastal Bend Wellness Foundation is taking steps to prevent an increase in overdoses by providing free Overdose Prevention classes and Naloxone kits to interested community members. Naloxone is the lifesaving medication designed to reverse an opioid related overdose.

corpus christi (kiiinews) — Overdose Prevention classes are not only beneficial to first responders, but also to the families, friends and peers of those using opioids.

Those who attend a class will learn how to recognize the signs of an overdose, quickly and safely administer Naloxone, and perform overdose after care until EMS arrives.

Individuals who attend a class may also receive a free Naloxone kit.

Organizations interested in hosting an Overdose Prevention class for staff, clients or their local community members can call Alison Johnson, the director of Outreach & Prevention, at 361.814.2001.
