CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) — Texas State Aquarium officials confirmed Monday that a bottlenose dolphin that was rushed to them for medical attention last week after it was found stranded along the Padre Island National Seashore died over the weekend.
The dolphin that was found stranded in the surf some 25 miles down the Padre Island National Seashore. Rescue crews arrived and raced to save the dolphin by taking it to the Texas State Aquarium's Sealab facility.
Someone spotted the dolphin in trouble along the beach and alerted one the national park's sea turtle patrols. A call was then made to the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network so they could help get the dolphin to a doctor.
3News followed the rescue team from the beach and all the way through town before arriving at the Texas State Aquarium's Sealab facility. Other volunteers arrived and helped get the dolphin into the facility's rehab tank.
Officials said it took two people to hold on to the dolphin and walk it around the tank because it was too weak to swim on its own.
Tom Schmid, President and CEO of the Texas State Aquarium, notified 3News on Monday morning that the dolphin had died over the weekend.
