Retired Army lieutenant honored with Women of Distinction Award

Retired General Flora Darpino was honored Tuesday as this year's Women of Distinction event during the Coastal Bend Women Lawyer's Association's annual spring luncheon at the Omni Hotel.

Retired General Flora Darpino was honored Tuesday as this year's Women of Distinction event during the Coastal Bend Women Lawyer's Association's annual spring luncheon at the Omni Hotel.

Darpino achieved many firsts in her distinguished Army career. In 2013 she was appointed to serve as the 39th Judge Advocate General, which is the senior military lawyer for the U.S. Army.

"My generation is kind of the one that grew up in the Army," Darpino said. "So really it's a trail that had to be walked over all those years, and I just happened to be at the trailhead at the time that women really had risen through the ranks."

Darpino not only achieved success in her career but did it while balancing her life as a wife and mother of two daughters.

Organizers said is strong, hardworking women like Lt. General Darpino that embody the Woman of Distinction award.
