How one small business owner is leaving a "lashing" impression on the beauty industry

Sydney Savoy hopes her success inspires other black women that anything is possible, and you can do it yourself

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — You’ve heard the saying beauty hurts, well so do the growing pains for up-and-coming artists trying to make it in a small town.

Our next featured woman in our BHM series shows us how the art of marketing, establishing your own brand and never settling has got her to where she is today.

After nearly 10 years of being an esthetician, 28-year-old Sydney Savoy can call herself her own boss. She is the owner and creator of Glowbysyd.

“I always knew I was going to be established in some way I just didn’t know how.”, said Savoy.

Savoy studied marketing a TAMUCC before heading to fashion school and then pursued her true passion which was to become a licensed esthetician.

Today, she specializes in lashes and brows. But it hasn’t been an easy journey.

“That was around COVID-19 so by the time i graduated it was really hard, I was kind of stressing about what am i going to do”, admitted Savoy.

Savoy worked with a local med spa before realizing she was ready to spread her wings. She says she learned a lot on the way and one of those lessons was advocating for herself in a non-black space-creating her own business and setting her own standards.

…” because a lot of times if you don’t people aren't going to know what you want – but on top of that people will have you accept whatever they give you and that’s across the board for any black woman, brown woman, woman of color.”

Savoy, who is currently working inside riptide salon, says her collabs with the salon along with a strong social media presence and consistency has gained her the clientele she has today. So much in fact she has expanded to Houston part time- and created her own Glowbysyd line.

“I'm going to have my own retail, i already sell my own lash trays and soon I'll be selling some tweezers.”, said Savoy.

Savoy says no two eyes are the same.

She hopes to continue growing a safe and comfortable environment for her clients making them feel even more beautiful when they leave while inspiring other black women that anything is possible, and you can do it yourself.

Also never be afraid to ask for more.
