11th Annual Barefoot Mardi Gras Festival and Parade draws thousands to the beach

Over 60 parade units glided along the beach, all decorated in traditional Mardi Gras fashion.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Thousands of people showed for the 11th Annual Barefoot Mardi Gras Parade and Festival on Padre Island Saturday morning.

The parade started at 11 a.m. Saturday, starting at Whitecap Beach, and ending at Padre Island Bali Park at the Briscoe King Pavilion.

Over 60 parade units glided along the beach, all decorated in traditional Mardi Gras fashion.

"Many different Mardi Gras parades in many different cities in the world, but none like the one in Corpus Christi on the island, because it's barefoot that means that people are enjoying the beaches," said. Teresa Rodriguez, Director of Public and International Relations.

There was a Kidz Fun Zone, live music, food, drinks, and plenty of Mardi Gras beads.

On Mardi Gras, Feb. 25, as part of the festival, the Waves Resort will host the 2020 King and Queen Ball, where a new Barefoot Mardi Gras King and Queen will be crowned.

People of South Texas did not have to leave the Coastal Bend area to experience Mardi Gras, and festival-goers say the best part of Barefoot Mardi Gras was kicking off their shoes.
