Día de los Muertos Festival to celebrate culture and community Oct. 28

3NEWS got a sneak peek into the festivities that will take place downtown, October 28. There are a few changes this year that you and your family should know about.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The annual Día de los Muertos Festival is welcoming thousands to one of the biggest celebrations of life in the U.S. For years, nonprofit K Space Contemporary has grown the beloved Día de los Muertos Festival into a must-see attraction for people all over the world looking to remember their ancestors and lost loved ones.

The Día de los Muertos Street Festival presented by K Space Contemporary and AXIS Tattoo and powered by the AEP Foundation is Saturday, October 28, from 3 p.m. to midnight, in Downtown Corpus Christi. The event is free.

3NEWS got a sneak peek into the festivities. Omar Lopez is a volunteer for the event. He says there are a few changes that people should know about. This event features three musical stages, over 80 arts and crafts vendors, a Kids Corner and plenty of food trucks!

"Parking is a challenge so we always encourage everyone to do the park and ride," Lopez said.  "You can park at City Hall or you can park at the county courthouse and the RTA will bring you right to the festival. The alters have moved they're at 615 N. Mesquite Street at La Stanza Event Center. Finally, the bars are different this year... we have two options this year. A cash option and card option to make the lines move as quickly as possible."

Lopez says the heartbeat of the festival is the Walk of Remembrance Ofrenda Display.

If you’d like to take a break from being outside, there is a fine arts exhibit inside K Space Contemporary.

Michelle Smythe is the executive director for K Space Contemporary.

"There are over 2,000 local people who are involved in this festival," she said. "People from artists making artwork, artists selling art as vendors at the festival." We have over 500 students who participate in our pinata contest alone, and then we have another 100 who participate in the youth art exhibition."

The Kiko’s Mexican Food & Cantina Extravaganza de Pinatas is located inside the K Space Contemporary art gallery at the corner of Chaparral and Starr St., right near the Main Stage.

The celebration starts on Thursday, October 26, at the Antonio E. Garcia Center for the Arts with the opening of the T-Shirt Gallery Youth Art Exhibition. This exhibition opening kicks off the Día de los Muertos Celebration from 6-8 p.m., 2021 Agnes St.

Friday, October 27 is the first ever Día de los Muertos 5K & 1K Fun Run sponsored by AEP Texas.
