Garcia Center's 'Día de los Muertos Kickoff Fiesta' to celebrate con catrinas y colores Oct. 26

The fiesta is meant to be a smaller-scale version of the sprawling Día de los Muertos Festival on Oct. 28, but that doesn't mean it's skimping on the fun or cultura!

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Día de los Muertos, with its bright lights, immaculate altars, vivid colors, and intricate calavera face paint, is a holiday that celebrates the enduring love and beauty that extends from Hispanic culture far beyond the grave.

What better way to prepare for the official Day of the Dead on Nov. 2 than by visiting the Garcia Arts & Education Center a week in advance?

The Garcia Center's Mayra Zamora and the Westside Business Association's Angela Leal joined us on Domingo Live to invite the public to their "Día de los Muertos Kickoff Fiesta" on Oct. 26.

Intended to be a smaller-scale version of the sprawling Día de los Muertos Festival on Oct. 28, the "Kickoff Fiesta" will take place from 5:30-8 p.m. at the Garcia Center in Corpus Christi.

As per Día de los Muertos tradition, one of the main attractions of the fiesta will be a community pet ofrenda on display throughout the night, along with numerous other altares honoring lost loved ones.

Additional highlights of the event include a ceramics demonstration and pottery sale, a live DJ, a "Boo in the Park" candy giveaway, vendors, food trucks, and a youth art exhibition showcasing artwork by young artists from K-Space Contemporary and the Garcia Center.

Attendees and their families will also have the chance to help paint a mural for the local music shop, Sound Vibrations!

You can stay updated on the Garcia Center's "Día de los Muertos Kickoff Fiesta" on its official Facebook event page.
