Domingo Live receives Outstanding Community Leadership award from LULAC Council No. 1

Domingo Live received the LULAC "Community Advocate of the Year" award for its advocacy of Latino and Hispanic causes across South Texas.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — In 1964, one Corpus Christi man saw the need for Hispanic and Latino representation on the airwaves and created one of the first Hispanic-led variety shows in South Texas: the Domingo Peña Show, now known as Domingo Live.

And 60 years later on Feb. 22, LULAC Council #1 awarded Domingo Live and other honorees for their leadership in Latino community service and advocacy within the Coastal Bend.

Domingo Live received the "Community Advocate of the Year" award alongside CITGO, HEB and the Port of Corpus Christi Authority.

Other honorees of the night included "Community Leaders of the Year" awardees Texas Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa, Judge Joe Benavides and Manuel Ayala for their respective contributions to Latino education, health, wellness and enrichment.

The greatest honor of the night, the "Lifetime Achievement Award for Humanitarianism and Civil Rights," was awarded to 98-year-old Oscar Wyatt of Wyatt Ranches. LULAC recognized Wyatt as one of the first ranchers in South Texas to embrace racial integration in the 1960s, as well as a firm supporter of racial equity in the workplace and a longtime friend of fellow civil rights advocate Dr. Hector P. Garcia.
