Spring is in the air and the birds are heading north to nest!
Larry Jordan with the Audubon Outdoor Club joined us on 3 News First Edition to talk about bird migration and why Corpus Christi is an important stop-over place for these birds.
Prior to their departure they stock-up on body fat which will sustain them for quite a bit. In addition, birds exploit the winds to their favor so they can go the distance by burning minimal fuel. They may shift altitude to find the best wind "conveyor belt." Larger birds like hawks, rely on thermals (hot air) rising from the ground in the mornings to gain altitude by simply soaring. These birds usually migrate during the day while smaller birds tend to fly at night to avoid predators.
