Jellyfish sightings on the rise in the Coastal Bend

An expert said several factors like food source, warm temperatures, even Tropical storm Alberto could have played a role on the increase of jellyfish in our area.

PADRE ISLAND, Texas — There has been an increase in jellyfish sightings on Padre Island.

Jace Tunnell with the Harte Research Institute at Texas A&M University- Corpus Christi said there have been many reports of jellyfish in the area.

He said there's a number of reasons why they're here in such high numbers, like food source, warm temperatures and even Tropical storm Alberto could have played a role.

"So will all of these things happening, it just seems like the perfect storm for getting a lot of these washing up," Tunnell said.

Resident Margeux Rendall said she was surprised to see many jellyfish but that didn't stop her and her family from enjoying a day at the beach.

"I was stung already, and my kids were stung a few times," Rendall said. "It's not too bad but it's the most  jellyfish I've ever seen here."

Tunell said beachgoers should be aware of the jellyfish, but they shouldn't worry too much if they get stung.

"This sting should last for 15 to 20 minutes then everything will be fine," Tunnell said. "If you do get stung, there are a couple of things we say [like] vinegar. So, it you have vinegar with you put that on you and then warm water."

3NEWS reached out to a surf camp on Padre Island that cancelled their fun Friday activities because several students got stung by the jellyfish. They said they will monitor the water this weekend ahead of Monday's camp session.

Tunnell said eventually the jellyfish should move on from our area.
