Cole Park playground closes so that upgrades can begin

Improvements are underway at the playground until the end of May 2024.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Corpus Christi Parks & Recreation Department announced it will close the Cole Park playground, located at 1900 Ocean Drive, for improvements beginning Monday.

"I feel pretty sad because I'm not going to be able to play, but I'm really excited about the new stuff happening so then I can play after," said residents Carlos Leon and Ivan Carrioo.

Changes are definitely on the way, thanks to this million-dollar project approved by voters during the 2022 bond election.

"They're probably adding more things to it," they said.

Modifications such as a brand-new play-for-all multigenerational playground, ADA accessibility, and upgraded seating can all be expected once the final touches are complete just in time for summer.

"I understand he'll be sad for a little bit," said parent Michael Kandrach. "But the outcome is going to be much better. We're going to have much more fun stuff to do."

While there are many other great parks across town, none of them compare to Cole Park.

"Well, we have some options I'm sure, but you know," he said. "It's just -- This is one of the biggest parks in Corpus. It's one of the best places to take kids."

Residents can also visit McCaughn Park at Water's Edge Park for the nearest playground along the Bayfront.
