CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — As some students in the Coastal Bend have already started school, others are getting prepared for another year of learning.
For the past eight years, the Corpus Christi Police Department and multiple law enforcement and first responder agencies have helped organize Operation Safe Return, the free resource fair for area students.
"All kinds of community services have come together and make sure kids in Nueces County and surrounding counties; make them ready for school," Officer Aaron Stewart said.
Several vendors and local groups set up booths in the exhibit halls inside of the American Bank Center. From 10 AM to 2 PM, students and their families went through lines to get various supplies and offers.
Children also had an opportunity to explore what local law enforcement officers use for their jobs, like CCPD motorcycles.
Some of the booths like the Asthma Education Group, informed parents too.
"We're talking education and awareness, we're trying to let people know that there are resources out there for asthma education," Terri Kraus said.
At another stand, Roy Stock with the City of Corpus Christi was able to offer advice about living with a disability.
"A lot of people are surprised, a lot of people don't realize these things are going on, the community is very active towards helping people overcome various issues," he said.
CCPD said they aimed to serve at least 3000 students during the 2019 Operation Safe Return.
