NUECES COUNTY, Texas — Governor Greg Abbott issued an Executive Order which will allow bars to reopen at 50-percent capacity, per County Judges approval.
In places with low COVID-19 hospitalizations, County Judges will be able to allow bars to reopen on Wednesday, October 14. The order will also increase the occupancy levels to 75-percent for all business establishments other than bars.
If a County Judge authorizes the opening of these establishments, certain protocols must be followed.
Dance floors must remain closed and all guests must be seated while eating or drinking, and must wear masks when they are not seated. Tables must remain limited to six people or less at all places and follow curfew guidelines.
Judge Canales said she will be reviewing the order and meeting with officials from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, the mayors of the cities in the county and the county sheriff to ensure that she can certify the county’s ability to assist in enforcing health protocols.
On Oct. 9, Corpus Christi's Development Services Virtual Task Force will be meeting to discuss converting a bar into a restaurant.
“This is our opportunity to continue to open our economy safely, and I intend to ensure that our bar owners understand the strict requirements and work with state, county and city agencies to comply with the letter and spirit of the law," Canales said in a statement.
"We have made tremendous progress in our infection, hospitalization and mortality rates, and I believe we can create safe protocols if we work together.”
