Hotels in Rockport see occupancy increase as Texas reopens

"Our weekends have been pretty much sold out," Mayor Patrick Rios said. "It's been difficult to get a room at the most popular hotels."

ROCKPORT, Texas — At the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, hotels in Rockport-Fulton were hit pretty hard as Aransas County had a stay-at-home order in place.

In late March, hotel occupancy was in the single digits, which forced some hotels to start discussing the option of closing. Normally, occupancy rates are up in the 90-percent range around that time.

With Texas in the final stage of reopening, Rockport Mayor Patrick Rios said hotels in Rockport are back up and running with occupancy rates at about 75-percent.

"Our weekends have been pretty much sold out," Mayor Rios said. "It's been difficult to get a room at the most popular hotels. The weekdays are still not as busy as before, but it's starting to pick up as summer comes on and people start taking vacations."

Rios said he wants to make sure everyone visiting Rockport-Fulton continues to practice social distancing and good hygiene.
