CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — There's a plan in the works, but it isn't publicly known. That's the official word on the now doomed Waves Resort on Padre Island. The site used to be a Schlitterbahn Water Park and Resort.
While the exact plan hasn't been made public, the possibilities are promising.
"That area has been a boulevard of broken expectations over the last decades," City Councilmen Greg Smith said.
Smith found out when the Diamond Beach Holdings LLC announced it would be demolishing all structures on the property to make way for new development.
The company purchased the property after the waterpark went bankrupt in 2018.
Now, DBH said it's wiping the slate clean and rethinking what kind of development might be best for that area and to complement the $18 million Park Road 22 bridge being built by the City.
"I have heard from residents their concerns about open space, green space and wetlands," Smith said. "I hope their plan accommodates that."
Corpus Christi City Manager Peter Zanoni tells 3News while his direct knowledge of the sites plans are limited, he was told by developers, it will be better.
"What we see today is gonna be improved 10 fold," Zanoni said.
One thing that is sure to add to any development out on the island is the Park Road 22 bridge project.
"That canal and bridge, what we're working on is gonna allow the exchange of boat traffic, but what it also is going to do is create tremendous amount of space for commercial development, retail development, walking promenades along the water way there," Zanoni added.
Zanoni added that the investors who own the property see the land as having much greater value than it currently has.
Demolition of the resort could start sometime in April.
