Another $24 million for Rapid Pavement Program

40 miles of residential streets are slated for upgrades this year.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Corpus Christi streets are about to get yet another upgrade thanks to $24 million approved by City Council.

The money is going towards the 'Rapid Pavement Program' to resurface nearly 40 miles of residential streets this year.

The city has also approved protocols to make sure that driveways, gutters and sidewalks match the quality of work citywide.

Corpus Christi City Council member Sylvia Campos says that she thinks residents are already seeing an improvement.

"Yes, I think by not getting as many complaints as we have in the past, I know this is my first term, but I was hearing it just daily," Campos said. "And now it's sort of like slowed down so for me it's telling me that we're doing something right."

"We do begin in March," Director of Public Works, Ernie De La Garza said. " We're currently in the process of executing contracts to get all that work started. But this summer if everything goes as planned. It should be an aggressive schedule to get a lot of the residential streets in poor condition up to standard."

De La Garza said that the city also agreed on protocols to protect it's investment in rejuvenating city streets by keeping all repairs under the watch of his department.

"Say for example Ocean Drive would get repaved and then a month later or a week later a company would come and cut a trench into a brand-new street," De La Garza said.

The Pavement Program will call for curbs, gutters and sidewalks to be spread out over the next ten years to get the streets paved first.

Councilwoman Campos says they have not forgotten.

"Every two years we get a chance to do bonds," Campos said. "And we also get to take it up into the public. We do public engagements and we ask for the public what do you want to see. If you want to continue to see street improvements, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, then that's where you come and speak out."
