Claim your money with the Unclaimed Property Program

Our Michael Gibson has a report on how to get your money from the state.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Turns out you may have unclaimed money waiting for you on the State Comptroller's website. Our reporter Michael Gibson showed this site to Nueces County officials, and they saw the state is holding thousands of dollars in the Unclaimed Property Program.

You can find his report here:

Someone had mentioned the states online unclaimed property holder program. So, I decided to check it out and for some reason I typed in Nueces County. Much to my surprise I found the state holding thousands of dollars of the County's money in that program. We then decided to head over to the courthouse and show officials what we found so they can start reclaiming that money.

We first showed up to tax assessor Collector Kevin Kieschnick's office. We asked him to get on his computer and go to the state comptroller's unclaimed property program. Once there he quickly spotted what we had found. Thousands of dollars that was supposed to go to his office over the years.

"I never thought to go look on this because it wouldn't of occurred to me that would be missing money that was supposed to be deposited to us that we didn't get." Said Nueces County tax assessor collector, Kevin Kieschnick.

Kieschnick was perplexed about how the money ended up sitting in the states unclaimed property holder program instead of simply being sent to his office.

"As we see we have some monies from the tax assessor Collector's office has me scratching my head how hard it is for them to find our office and how that money didn't get here.3:45:40 Kevin Kieschnick, Nueces County tax assessor collector."

We then asked County Judge Barbara Canales to get on her computer and go to the same unclaimed money site. She also typed in Nueces County. There's at least 15-thousand dollars of the County's money there.

"So we have Belinda Hinojosa Person she is a governmental Affairs Officer here." Said Judge Canales. "So, I will show her this and get her to contact the comptroller and say we wish to claim them all….we can do it online but how about for future unclaimed property?"

The Judge was surprised to find the money on the site and thinks it's a wake-up call for all governmental agencies.

"It's a fantastic website and it looks like everybody should at least go on all the political jurisdictions."

Now if you'd like to check to see if you have any money in the program you can simply go to claimittexas.org.

Good luck.
