4th Annual Funky Sock Walk

A wave of colorful and patterned socks took over Cole Park on Sunday

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas —
The Funky Sock Walk was to support down syndrome awareness at the funky sock walk.
The occasion catered to families and friends impacted by down syndrome and helped raise awareness.
This was the first year for the Patterson family to attend.
Their 2-month-old son, Ethan was diagnosed with down syndrome.

"He's my big strong boy," BC Patterson, Ethan’s father said.

Ethan’s parents said they want to give their son the best life possible, so as soon as Ethan was diagnosed they began looking for resources.

“Once we found out he had down syndrome, it's like 'OK, let's see what kind of support groups are out there,'” Linda Patterson, Ethan’s mom said.

But within Corpus Christi they weren't able to find much.

“They do have a lot of information just not enough support for children with down syndrome,” she said.

That's why events like the Funky Sock Walk are important.

“We have a lot of vendors here who have plenty of resources here for all the parents of basically any age,” Juan Castillo said.

Castillo is the organizer of the walk and has children with down syndrome.

He said the funky sock walk allows families to be supported by a community who knows what they're going through and have fun.

“It's so awesome to see our families get together,” he said. “Not only as special needs parents, but just parents in general.”
