Assistant Police Chief Albert Martinez, a longtime veteran of the Alice Police Department, has decided to retire.

Martinez started as a patrolman some 25 years ago and worked his way up in the department. For the past two years, he has been the assistant police chief and has filled in twice as interim police chief following departures of former chiefs Daniel Bueno and Randy Weems.

Martinez was hoping to be named chief by the City of Alice and had applied for that position, but the City decided to select Rex Ramon as chief instead last Thursday.

"Over the weekend, you know, I communicated with my God and it was through faith and direction from Him that reconfirmed what direction I was taking, and can never go wrong when you follow his steps," Martinez said. "So that's when I decided. So I walked in Monday morning with a letter of retirement."

Martinez said he is happy that he was able to serve and retire with dignity and honor and is looking forward to spending time with his family.
