ROCKPORT, Texas — A famous Rockport blue crab is expected to return soon to Rockport Beach Park.
Keep Aransas County Beautiful began a campaign to raise funds to bring back the blue crab that was destroyed by Hurricane Harvey, estimating $55,000 to recreate the landmark accordint to a fiberglass manufacturer.
"The blue crab is a symbol of Rockport. It's one of the great welcome signs that basically symbolizes this city. This area," John Aquilino said.
According ot Aquilino, they are about to start a nationwide search for artists to bid on rebuilding the crab.
The 25 ft. tall fiberglass and aluminum replica has been a favorite for tourists and locals for pictures to mark visits to Rockport Beach Park. The crab was first built in the 50's and felt apart due to strong winds, it wasn't until 2012 that a resident designed and built a new big lue crab that was 25 ft. wide and 27 ft. tall.
