Beaches packed even with coastal flooding for Memorial Weekend

High tides are expected to flood Padre Island shoreline throughout Memorial Day Weekend.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Big puddles of water are what's left from high tides that caused flooding along the North Padre Island shoreline early Saturday morning.

Parks and Recs Employee Suwaen Thanpho said he helped three turtles back into the water after the high tides brought them in.

"The tides this morning was right up at that track line there," Thanpho said. "It has receded it, but it hasn't gone down more than that."

The flooding didn't stop Kenneth Leblanc and his family from setting up for their annual Memorial Weekend beach outing.

"The tides actually came all the way up to the tent, where we had set up. So, I checked the forecast and score of what the tide level was, and we were right about where the high tide was for the day," Leblanc said "So, I knew we had picked a good spot so the water wouldn't inundating our camping area."

Coty Trumbower said he was amazed that the tides were all the way up to the dunes.

"Haven't seen it come up this fast and recede this fast. It's just really fast.," Trumbower said.

Thanpho said there is a big police and lifeguard presence on the beach to insecure everyone is safe.

"Pretty safe out here all day. We don't have no incidents. Everybody is aware of the rip currents out there," Thanpho said. "We have plenty of lifeguards, police everywhere."

Although the tides are high, Leblanc said that's not stopping his family from enjoying the beach.

"We know with the weather patterns we're having recently; they were talking about the tide water being higher than normal.," Leblanc said. "We got to be careful with the kids and grandkids for the riptides so like I said we're going to make the best out of it."

Corpus Christi Police, Fire Department, and lifeguards are teaming up to make sure all beach goers stay safe.

Police said they are heavily monitoring the beaches, plus they will share a command post with the fire department on the Island to provide triage, treatment, and transport services this Memorial Day Weekend.
