Community shows support for Dwayne Johnson's family at benefit

The Barn hosted a food benefit and the line wrapped around the building throughout the whole event.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — As the investigation continues for the shooting that took the life of 18-year-old Dwayne Johnson, community members have come together to raise money for his grieving family.

The Barn hosted a food benefit on Wednesday, and the line wrapped around the building throughout the entire event.

Amelia Tijerina is the mother of Dwayne's two young children. She is set to give birth to their son next month.

"And my daughter sits here and asks me every single day, 'where daddy go mom, where daddy go,' And I have to sit there and explain to her like 'baby he's in Heaven,'" Tijerina said.

She said his death has been hard but the support from her family and the community keeps her going.

"It means a lot, I really appreciate everybody who's coming by to donate anything," Tijerina said. "I just want him to be laid to rest and I just want justice for him."

Nikki Florita was grabbing lunch for her co-workers when she decided to go to the benefit. She went to school with Johnson and remembers him as a nice person who was always smiling.

"It's just so sad and I don't want to say anything bad about the police, but something needs to change and something needs to get better because this community doesn't deserve this," Florita said.

Duvie Castanon's stepson was Johnson's best friend. She said she knew him since he was 9 years old and is sad his life was taken so soon.

"It could've been anybody's kid, anybody's brother, nephew, son, grandson," Castanon said. "And they have a lot of support behind them and I hope they get the answers they're looking for."

As police continue to investigate the shooting, Tijerina said, at this moment, the family has not received any details about the case.

"It's not just like our case, like the person that happened three weeks ago too, they deserve to know," Tijerina said. "It's not fair, it's not fair. We deserve to know why, what, for what reason. We deserve to see body cam footage, what really happened."

Tijerina said the family has plans to keep Dwayne's legacy alive and will continue to fight for justice.
