Check out what’s coming to Sherrill Veterans Memorial Park

The U.S. Army H-1 Bell Huey helicopter will be a monument to the local and national armed forces of the Army Deport and Naval Air Station Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Exciting changes are underway for Sherrill Veterans Memorial Park. Months have been spent designing concepts for monuments. The city of Corpus Christi is ready to share what new additions people can expect from the park dedicated to armed forces.

Representatives of veteran organizations have been a big help to the city for concept ideas. What they came up with is placing a U.S. Army H-1 Bell Huey helicopter and mainsail from a submarine at Sherrill Park.

The helicopter is in town and is currently being refurbished. Robert Dodd, the parks and recreation director for Corpus Christi says he's excited to see what the finished product will look like.

"It's being painted, it's getting some equipment put on there, and obviously we're working on the pedestal," he said. "Philip Ramirez is working on the pedestal, and we're getting that to where it needs to be, and once we get it installed it will be a highlight of Sherrill Veterans Memorial Park."

The city of Corpus Christi held two public input sessions for the master plan for Sherrill Veterans Memorial Park. There are plans in place to add a mainsail from the U.S.S. city of Corpus Christi submarine to the park too. But at this time, the memorandum of agreement for the U.S.S. mainsail is still pending to be executed between the city of Corpus Christi and navy veterans.

"I remember growing up as a kid there was a helicopter we used to have that set out in McCaughan Park right outside the old Memorial Colosseum, that was just historic," Dodd said. "Anything that we can highlight the area and highlight out Memorial Park there at Sherrill Park is something we'd like to do."

The U.S. Army H-1 Bell Huey helicopter will be a monument dedicated to the local and national armed forces of the Army Depot and Naval Air Station Corpus Christi. At this time, there are no dates for the installation of these two monuments but 3NEWS will continue to monitor the progress for Sherrill Park's master plan.
