Construction begins on new playground in Port Aransas

The director of Parks and Recreation said the play area is set to open in early 2025, but the City still has to vote on the landscaping contract.

PORT ARANSAS, Texas — Roberts Point Park is an important part in the Port Aransas community and in a couple of months, a new playground will open where the original one stood.

Director of Parks and Recreation of the City of Port Aransas, Colleen Simpson said this new play area will be a new landmark for the community to enjoy.

"Grandparents, parents, family, friends, everyone is going to want to play on this and they will be able to because of the way we built it," Simpson said. "It's accessible for all ability levels."

Unlike the old playground that was damaged over time by storms, Simpson said the new materials used to built the playground will be weather resistant.

"It's sustainable harvested wood that has special treatment that's safe for children and we're using galvanized metals and stainless steel metals and composite materials that should last longer time out here," Simpson said.

She said this project is on track for the initial planned opening in early 2025 but the City has to vote on the landscaping contract. Which if not passed could delay the opening of the playground.

"Landscaping out to bid a couple of times and it was unsuccessful and so we we're lucky enough that Craftsman was able to take on and add to their site work that they were already doing," Simpson said. "So they're going to do a change order on the project and hopefully city council will approve that in December so we can stay on schedule and move forward."

Simpson said if everything goes to plan, the ribbon cutting ceremony will happen on Valentine's Day.
