Padre Island sinkhole continues to grow, putting family's home in danger

Two weeks ago, Tropical Storm Alberto left behind a sinkhole that is now putting a family's home in danger.

PADRE ISLAND, Texas — It's been nearly two weeks since Tropical Storm Alberto left behind a sinkhole for a family on Padre Island.

The Edgecomb family woke up to a big surprise. A sinkhole right next to their house.

Homeowner David Edgecomb, who said the Padre Isles Property's Owners Association has been in communication with him about fixing the sinkhole -- but it's taking too long, and he's worried about future storms making the sinkhole bigger and leading to more damage on the foundation of his home.

"The water, the dirt had basically been sucked out from under them to the failed wall," Edgecomb said.  "44-foot trees laying on their side."

The distressed homeowner says the sinkhole is getting bigger as time passes and it's putting two properties in danger.

"The sinkhole continues to grow. You can see my neighbor's comes back considerably, and we lost some ground around the pool," Edgecomb said.

The POA funded the removal of trees and are working to put a bulkhead behind the breached bulkhead. Edgecomb is ready to stabilize the area near his house but at the moment he can't do much until the new bulkhead is built.

"So, it's kind of a race against time. We're concerned that our house, dirt around the foundation slowly fades away," Edgewood said. "They are doing what they can as quickly as they can but will never be as quickly as they can, but it will never be fast enough. There is so much at stake. The faster the better."

Edgecomb can breathe a bit of relief as Tropical Storm Beryl heads east but knowing it's hurricane season, he said his family has been preparing for the worst.

"At first, we weren't sure if the house was going to stay or go," Edgewood said. "So, we took precautions first to make sure everyone was safe and moved everything out of our house."

3NEWS reached out to the Padre Isles Property Owners Association for an update on the sinkhole at the Edgecomb's property but they have yet to respond back.
