Beeville residents concerned about yellow water

The city of Beeville said the water has been tested and is safe to use and consume.

BEEVILLE, Texas — Several residents are sharing pictures and videos of yellow tap water in Beeville that is causing a stir on social media.

Joy Kansteiner has lived in Beeville for five years and said she's noticed the discoloration before, but it's become worse.

"It's hard to take a bath, we don't want to feed our dogs it, we don't want to cook with it," Kansteiner said. "We don't want to do nothing with it because of the foul odor and the disgust it looks like. But it looks like a whole bunch of people urinated in the water."

3NEWS reached out to the City of Beeville who said the discoloration is caused by lake organics like Algae and leaves, stirred up by recent rain. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality said the water has been tested and is safe to use and consume. However, some residents are tired of having to shower and wash clothes with yellow water that has a bad smell.

"Well I've noticed it for the last couple of years but for the last month or longer, maybe two months it's actually gotten really bad," Kansteiner said. "The water is completely yellow and there is a foul odor to it."

Across town, CC's Smoothie Coffee Tea invested in a water filtration system that removes toxins like heavy metals, lead and so much more.

Barista JC Cano said the filters are constantly being changed.

"We're having to change every two or three months," Cano said. "We're only supposed to change those filters out twice a year and now we're having to switch it out twice a quarter and it gets costly as well."

Kansteiner said she was notified about the water issue by a Facebook post a couple months ago.

"The only thing I had heard -- it and was through via Facebook -- is the fact that there may be some discoloration, but they are in the process of cleaning the system up," she said. "But nothing has been done."

Kansteiner said Beeville is home but the water issue is making it very hard to live a normal life.

"I've already considered moving out of this town," she said. "I've considered picking my daughter up, my granddaughter, my house up right here and we're getting out of town. That is what I'm desperately considering. I can't do this anymore."
