CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A Nueces County jailer is now behind bars after he was arrested Tuesday for murder.
According to Nueces County Sheriff J.C. Hooper, a warrant was issued Tuesday for the arrest of 24-year-old Angel Martinez and he was taken into custody the same day. He is now behind bars in the Nueces County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
The investigation is being handled by the Corpus Christi Police Department.
According to CCPD officials, Martinez is suspected in the shooting death of 21-year-old Mark Anthony Rios back on May 5, 2018.
Investigators said Rios was crawling through the window of a residence in the 5800 block of Kimbrough Drive to see a girl just before 1 a.m. when the shooting took place. When officers arrived at the scene they found Rios inside the residence dead from multiple gunshot wounds.
Witnesses told police that Rios had tried to enter the residence through a door but when he was unable to do so, decided to break in through a window. That's when police said a male who was at the residence, now identified as Martinez, shot Rios several times.
Sheriff Hooper said Martinez is now on administrative leave without pay and is in the process of being terminated from his job at the Nueces County Jail.
