District Attorney to announces grand jury's decision on officer-involved shooting

Nueces County District Attorney Mark Gonzalez talked about the grand jury's decision to see if any criminal liability exists in the shooting of Richard Salazar.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Nueces County District Attorney's Office held a press conference about the March 26 officer-involved shooting on the 200 block of Torreon Street.

According to the press release on Facebook, on Monday DA Mark Gonzalez will talk about the grand jury's decision as to whether there was any criminal liability.

Corpus Christi Police said back on March 26, officers were looking for robbery suspects near the 200 block of Torreon when they mistakenly shot Richard Salazar in front of his home.

It turns out Salazar was not involved in the robbery.

At a press conference, police chief Mike Markle said Salazar was not being compliant when officers questioned him and a lighter in his hand was mistaken for a weapon.

He said Gilbert Cantu was the officer who fired his gun and officer Jacqueline Deleon was involved.

Both were placed on administrative leave in April.

The DA's office said they handed over the case to the grand jury to see if any criminal liability exists.

Salazar's family said he had numerous surgeries and had to go to physical therapy after the shooting.

In May, Salazar filed a $12.5 million dollar lawsuit against the city.

The suit claims that officers Cantu and Deleon used excessive force.

The DA will held that press conference about the grand jury's decision on Monday at 10 a.m. at the commissioners court.
