NARCAN backorder forces Ingleside ISD to temporarily go without

Senate Bill 629 requires Texas school districts to have the overdose reversal drug on-hand, but a backlog is forcing some local districts to wait on their shipment.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Ingleside ISD's move to bring NARCAN on campuses to prevent a drug overdose is rolling out, but with one challenge.

Ingleside ISD safety and student services director Scott Kilgore tells 3NEWS the district ordered NARCAN, but just two days ago, it received a notification because of high demand throughout the state it will not be shipped for another 30-45 days.

"As a parent it makes me feel at ease knowing that if something were to happen to my child, he'll have access to whatever he may need to save his life," he said.  "Fentanyl overdoses and opioid overdoses that individual doesn't even know they've ingested that at times. Things may be laced with it that you just pick up."

Kilgore says according to the last Texas legislative session Senate Bill 629 legislators signed into law that school districts should have NARCAN on campuses.

“We just want to make sure that we're providing every opportunity we can to keep our people safe in Ingleside."

Ingleside ISD Board of Trustees President Teresa Flores said nurses on the district's campuses will be fully trained to administer NARCAN.

"Our board just recently returned from annual training in Dallas, we've gone multiple years,” Flores said. “And this is the first year they actually had classes on fentanyl so boards were aware of what can actually happen."

Kilgore says storage of the opioid antagonist will be under lock and key.

"All of our school districts across the state are glad that we have the opportunity to do more," he said.

Kilgore adds training will take place November 6 for select administrators and staff who are around large groups of students in case a nurse is not available. The district told 3NEWS they have not had any overdose cases yet but they are prepared to respond.
