CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — With Halloween just one week away, many kids are looking forward to the candy!
You would think that means more cavities to be on the lookout for, but that might not be true.
3NEWS wanted to find out who is more guilty when it comes to overindulging in those sweets.
Dawod Dental's Dr. Haysam Dawod said cavities take a while to appear, so dentists typically don't see them right after Halloween. However, what specialists such as Dawod said they expect to see over the coming weeks is a wide range of issues across a large group of people from kids to adults.
“The most common thing we see are either broken fillings, pulled out fillings or crowns that come off,” he said.
Resisting the treats that you may crave this time of year is easier said than done.
“Either they bit into a hard candy that broke something, or pulled something out of the tooth," he said. "Unless someone already has an existing problem like a cavity when they eat sweets, it kind of exacerbates the problem.”
Dawod doesn’t want to take the bite out of all the fun, though. This is his solution:
“Let the children go trick or treating, but do not give them so much candy at one time, or at least disperse it over time.”
Dawod said reaching for salty snacks like pretzels is a good alternative for a Halloween treat. He said you can enjoy the holiday, but don't overindulge that "sweet tooth."
“Like anything else really, as long as you do it within reason, in moderation everything is cool.”
