SAN ANTONIO — A historic addition to the Alamo was unveiled Friday, as a painting of Benjamin Milam was put on display on the 189th anniversary of the Battle of Béxar.
"Who will go with old Ben Milam into San Antonio?" That was the cry Milam had in late 1835 to inspire an assault during the battle, paving the way for Texas Independence.
Milam lost his life on that day on Dec. 7, 1835, but his legacy remains 189 years later.
Due to the anniversary, a portrait painted by Matthew Harris Jouett, known for his paintings of Thomas Jefferson and other historical figures, was unveiled along with an original document written right after the Battle of Béxar.
And to make it even more meaningful, descendants of Milam's were the ones who unveiled the painting.
