Island Report: Construction for the Water Exchange Bridge on Padre Island is ready to begin

Island Moon Publisher Dale Rankin takes a look at the project in this week's Island report.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — This week the City of Corpus Christi gave local contractor Haas Anderson received the go ahead to begin construction of the Water Exchange Bridge on Padre Island.

Island Moon Publisher Dale Rankin takes a look at the project in this week's Island Report.

When the month of June began, this area west of South Padre Island Drive on the island was a field full of grass.

Now less than thirty days later excavation work on this 3000 foot x 100 foot canal is essentially complete and work on bulkheads is almost halfway done.

Progress on the canal work prompted the city to pull the trigger on the $14 Million Park Road Water Exchange Bridge this week, which has been in the works since 2004. The bridge will connect the water on each side of the road and allow for water and boats with fourteen feet of clearance to move from the canals to the Gulf of Mexico without having to access the Laguna Madre.
