CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — In Jim Wells County, there's a program in place that helps track stray livestock for landowners.
Once they’re registered to the Rural Property and Livestock Theft Prevention program, properties receive a placard, which is then recorded with their dispatch office.
Sheriff Danny Bueno said if animals are found wandering, his office or any law enforcement agency can look up the placard number and then contact the landowner.
"It really has done an excellent job for us and we are able to identify and contact the owners right away, mend their fences and get those animals back in place,” he said.
Bueno said the office already has more than 360 properties registered, with more people wanting to participate.
He also said the program also helps when trying to find owners when, and if, their fences are damaged during bailouts involving undocumented immigration.
Jim Wells County landowners can find out more by calling the sheriff's office at (361) 668-0341.
