Corpus Christi (KIII News) — A 15-year-old resident is already a national champion Tuesday in the world of boxing.
Xavier Nunez is proving to be a hard hitter as he came back home with another top honor.
You don't want to mess with Nunez in the ring. That's because he's already making waves in the world of boxing. Just this past weekend, he brought home the gold.
Most of Nunez' time is spent in front of a punching bag training for his next title, and at just 15 his hard work and focus is paying off.
"I fought a lot of great, experienced fighters and came out on top," Nunez said.
A video of Nunez can be seen of him fighting his way to gold at the National Junior Olympics in Charleston, West Virginia, for the 125 weight class.
"At the national level he's not just boxing any normal kid, he's boxing the top of the food chain. Bringing this back is huge, and he's going to be recognized worldwide, not just nationally," Jordan Pinney said.
Pinney is the owner of Elite Fitness in Ingleside and has been in Nunez' corner every step of the way. Nunez was training every day for the last couple of months leading up to the Junior Olympics.
"Very proud. He's definitely the future of boxing for Corpus Christi. Very talented," Pinney said.
"What this young man accomplished is just amazing," his father Mack Oliver said.
Nunez is already a fantastic young athlete who has won several belts and title. Nunez started boxing at the young age of three and through it all his dad has always remained his number one fan.
According to Nunez, he will continue to train and travel from Corpus Christi to Ingleside and even to San Antonio to prepare for his next challenge.
