Texas A&M Forest Service awards $15.7 million in grants to volunteer fire departments

Local volunteer fire departments will receive $20,000 in grant funds for fire trucks, personal protective gear and other fire and rescue equipment.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Texas A&M Forest Service awarded more than $15.7 million in assistance grants to 260 rural volunteer fire departments last week.

The funds from these grants will reimburse rural volunteer fire departments (VFDs) for fire trucks, training aids, slip-ons and chassis and other fire and rescue equipment.

Coastal Bend and surrounding counties will benefit from this latest round of grants. Bee, Brooks and Live Oak County volunteer fire departments are each set to receive $20,000 funds for personal protective equipment.

Nueces County Emergency Services District No. 3 and Robstown Fire Department will both receive $20,000 fire and rescue equipment grants.

“Without question, volunteer fire departments in Texas are among the best in the nation, and they make a huge difference in the lives of people on their worst days,” said Texas A&M Forest Service Capacity Building Department Director Jason Keiningham.

The following area departments will get grants:

  • Rockport VFD- Training Aids $10,000
  • Pettus-Tuleta VFD- Personal Protective Equipment $20,000
  • Southern Brooks VFD- Personal Protective Equipment $20,000
  • Ben Bolt Fire Dept- Large Truck Chassis $100,000
  • Ben Bolt Fire Dept - Slip-On Unit $20,000
  • George West VFD- Personal Protective Equipment $20,000
  • Lagarto VFD Live Oak Water Tender $240,000
  • Swinney Switch VFD- Fire and Rescue Equipment $20,000
  • Whitsett- Large Brush Truck $240,000
  • Nueces County ESD #3- Fire and Rescue Equipment $20,000
  • Robstown FD- Fire and Rescue Equipment 20,000
