80 patients evacuated after fire breaks out in nursing home

Officials say the fire was started by greasy rags in a box inside the kitchen.

SAN ANTONIO — 80 special needs patients had to be evacuated from a nursing home on the northeast side of town after a fire broke out in their kitchen, SAFD says.

San Antonio firefighters responded to the Regent Care Center of Oakwell Farms located in the 8500 block of Laurens Lane near Harry Wurzbach Road around 10:30 p.m. Sunday for reports of a fire.

When first responders arrived, they found a small fire inside the kitchen. Officials say the fire was started by greasy rags in a box they found.

80 special needs patients from the nursing home had to be evacuated as a precaution. The fire was extinguished quickly, and the patients were returned to their rooms.

This is a developing story.
