People with disabilities will have the option to view the 2024 Buc Days Parade in an accessible way

The Corpus Christi RTA is making it all possible by offering a designated space on Leopard Street, along the side of the Staples Street Station building.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Buc Days Rally Night Parade will be happening on Saturday and CCRTA is doing something special to make sure that everyone, regardless of disability, can enjoy the South Texas tradition

Managing director of public relations, Rita Patrick says accessibility is always at the forefront of CCRTA’S mind.

“It is part of our mission and vision to help our community, and that’s what we’re here for. We want to make sure that everyone enjoys it. We have this prime location, and we wanted to share that area,” Patrick said.

Right in front of their downtown building, between Waco and Staples Street is where CCRTA will be offering an accessible viewing section for those with disabilities and their families to view the parade.

“We wanted to make sure that they could have a designated area that is a safe zone for them. We have security in the area. We designate it for them and their family; up to six people,” Patrick said.

Dr. Jennifer Scott with the city's Committee for Persons with Disabilities says offering a space for people who may have a hard time navigating a crowded event can truly make a difference between a difficult and memorable experience.

“I mean, how are they supposed to enjoy the parade or be included in community events like that if there’s not accessible places for them? I feel like it’s really a great thing that they’re doing because that is inclusive of our community,” she said.

Scott believes the experience RTA is offering makes all the difference for those who may otherwise sit out on an event like the Buc Days Rally Night Parade because of safety or mobility concerns.

“This year we wanted to make sure that our riders could view the parade in a comfortable, clean, safe environment, so we made sure that we designated a larger area to accommodate more people this year,” she said.

CCRTA tells 3NEWS there will be space for a little over 100 people in the accessible viewing section. Those interested will need to have a wristband to enter and sit in that section.

Those with disabilities or their family members can call CCRTA customer service to schedule a pickup of those wrist bands. The deadline to pick up wristbands is 3PM on Friday, May 3.
