Corpus Christi (KIII News) — Retiring Nueces County Judge Loyd Neal got quite a big honor Monday as commissioners met for the ceremonial ribbon cutting at the new County Judge Loyd Neal Airport Terminal at the Nueces County Airport.
It was first announced last year that a terminal at the county airport would be named in honor of the outgoing judge thanks to his efforts to fund the $1.2 million improvements to the airport. The improvements were an effort to encourage more industrial growth in the western part of the county as the Texas Department of Transportation moves forward with the construction of the new I-69 corridor.
"Hopefully the judge and the court will continue the efforts to develop this airport into a regional gem," Neal said. "But today is a great day and having it named for me is an honor and I'm very humbled, and I appreciate it very much."
The new improvements will help those who use the airport most, like those who own their own plane and crop dusters.
Judge Neal retires at the end of the year.
