CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority awarded three African American females with scholarships.
The ceremony took place at Miller High School. The students are from Moody, Carroll and Veterans Memorial high school.
The sorority helps African American female students break barriers and take their first steps into their college journey.
Zyria Thompson, one of the recipients, says she is happy to have the financial help she received.
"It's definitely gonna help when I need things for school such as books and supplies and stuff like that. Knowing that I have the extra money to get it. I don't have to worry about not getting it for when I need to study and stuff like that," said Thompson.
Students who applied had to write an essay about how the scholarship would contribute to long-term goals.
Cynthia Gonzales, a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority explained how their organization promotes unity.
"It is indeed our honor to support young people in every area of life. Scholarships and high moral and ethical standards is the way about which Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority operates and this is just one opportunity for us to give back to encourage them to be their best, look their best and always act their best," Gonzales said.
The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is a national organization dedicated to offering scholarships to area students.
