Alfredo Deleon accepts plea deal, facing life in prison for 2021 murder of Kingsville Sergeant Sherman Benys

Deleon appeared before State District Judge Jack Pulcher at the Kleberg County Courthouse.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Alfredo Deleon agreed to a plea deal on Friday to avoid a trial for the 2021 death of Kingsville Sergeant Sherman Benys.

Deleon appeared before State District Judge Jack Pulcher at the Kleberg County Courthouse. District Attorney John Hubert, Deleon, and his attorneys agreed to the plea deal, ensuring the convicted murderer remains in prison for life.

Attempted capital murder charges and additional crimes were actually added to the capital murder case as an extra measure.

"You tried stack sentence just to make sure that even if the law changes, even if there's some type of court, that says no more life without parole, the sentences are still stacked, he needs to spend the rest of his life in prison," Hubert said.

After Pulcher approved the plea agreement, individuals in the court were allowed to present their victim impact statements.

Vicky Benys, Sherman's wife, confronted Deleon, stating that on the day her husband died, the Kingsville officer was responding to a domestic call at Deleon's family home.

"We are broken you took someone from us that we will never be able to replace, and our lives will never be the same again without him," Vicky said.

Deleon was escorted from the courtroom and returned to the county jail. Subsequently, he will be transferred to state prison for life.

"Sherman was a dear friend to myself and many other people in the community, and I can tell you that the law enforcement community will never be the same," Kleberg County Sheriff Richard Kirkpatrick.

Meanwhile, the Benys family and friends are left trying to make sense of the loss of their family member.
