ALICE, Texas — Most big turkey giveaways take months of planning, but one Alice company is stepping in to give out hundreds of turkeys all in less than a week.
CEO of Mi Casa Home Health Agency, Blanca Castillo-Garcia, has helped her community in more ways than she can remember over the years. Today, she's helping in yet another way with a turkey giveaway.
"We love our community and we love our surrounding areas," she said. "We're up to 600 to 700 turkeys and we're asking for donations in the areas."
She said they hope to reach a thousand before Tuesday because the need in Alice is great.
"A lot of need for it because of elderly and single parents and middle class, it's just the need in our community and all surrounding areas," Castillo-Garcia said.
Mayor of Alice Cynthia Carrasco said the community looks forward to the annual turkey giveaway.
"We don't realize the hardship of others and that turkey to feed that child, feed their family," she said. "To have that fellowship means a lot and they do count on it. You know it's hard times."
Carrasco is amazed that Castillo-Garcia planned a substitute giveaway in just 24 hours. Her company just hosted a thanksgiving meal event last week.
To recognize Castillo-Garcia for her community service, the mayor awarded her the key to the city.
"How amazing and what a heart," Carrasco said. "And you can tell they care about their community and for them to step up in that way in short notice is amazing."
Castillo-Garcia said that's what this time of year is all about.
"Thanksgiving is a time of coming together with family and friends and being supportive," she said.
Tuesday's giveaway will be from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Mi Casa Home Health Agency in Alice. It's first come, first served and one turkey will be given per vehicle.
