All four lanes of South Staples Street project reopen after 2 years

The $14M project began in 2021.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — South Staples Street drivers are breathing a sigh of relief this week, as the 2-year-long project comes to a close.

"I’m very happy because we have a lot of customers coming here," Balboa Pet Shop’s Isadora Flores.

She said her uncle’s business, which she manages, has been on the corner of South Staples Street and Kostoryz Road for more than a decade, and they are happy to see the construction come to an end.

"Because we are in the intersection area, it’s very hard for us and the customer to go over here and groom their dogs or buy pets from us," she said.

City of Corpus Christi officials said Tuesday that the $14 million project is nearing completion.

There are still a couple of loose ends to tie up, they said, but lanes are fully open, and the rest of the work is slated to be wrapped in 2 weeks. None of which affects traffic.

Family-run Carr’s Cleaners & Laundry has been family run in the Coastal Bend for more than 80 years. One of its locations is on South Staples near Louisiana Avenue.

"Finally, the road has opened up, which is very nice,” said owner Carr Skinner. “After surviving COVID, then they tear our road up."

Skinner said he’s happy to have kept his customers despite the construction.

"That’s right – it’s very nice,” he said. “(Customers) don’t have to have a 4-wheel drive to get in here anymore."
