American Federation of Teachers demands pay raises for Corpus Christi teachers

The raise percentages are expected to be released at the next CCISD board meeting on July 22.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The American Federation of Teachers were fired up Thursday morning demanding that the Corpus Christi Independent School District school board release the pay raise percentage for teachers.

The raise percentages are expected to be released at the next CCISD board meeting on July 22.

According to AFT president Nancy Vera, Other area school districts have released their percentages numbers, and there is no excuse why the CCISD board can't release theirs.

Vera said teachers are struggling to take care of their families and their students on such little pay. Teachers that try to go to districts that pay more have a July 12 deadline.

Vera feels that since CCISD is not releasing their pay raise percentages until July 22, it puts teachers in a bind.

"Unfortunately if you ask to leave to another school district that pays more after the July 12 deadline than they will pursue teacher certifications or revoke teacher certifications for a year so that teachers won't be able to leave," Vera said.

Vera believes it's not fair for teachers not to know what they are going to be making next year.

In June Governor Abbott signed Texas House Bill 3 into law which includes a $6.5 billion to improve public education and increase teacher pay.

CCISD released the following statement in response to Vera's comments:
