CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas —
Ahead of the cold weather, Interim Program Manager for Corpus Christi Animal Care Services, Miguel Escobar says that his department is expecting an influx of stray animals.
"We're expecting that high influx along with the animals that we currently have sheltered here, so what we're asking the community to do is to see if they're able, or if they have the ability to foster some of our animals that are already vetted, so we can have additional placement for any animals," Escobar said.
While some may choose to foster animals to give them a break from shelter life, Escobar said many times that animal ends up finding their forever home.
"We also have some individuals who decide to foster, and while they're fostering that fur baby that they do have they're like, 'You know, I want to fully commit, and I want to adopt this animal' and that's perfectly fine as well," he said.
Escobar says anyone who chooses to become a short-term foster will be sent home with food if needed, and cages and bedding as long as their supplies last.
For those that already have their own pets at home, there are a few things they should keep in mind in order to stay in line with city ordinances.
"Right now, we're doing proactive patrolling, you know educating the owners that they have to have their animals inside when it does end up hitting the ambient temperature of 32 degrees and making sure that the animals do need bedding when the ambient temperature drops below 50 degrees," he said.
If you're interested in fostering an animal before or during the cold front, you can email the department at livereleaseteam@cctexas.com or you can call 361-826-4630.
Animal Care Services will be available by phone 24 hours a day, now through Wednesday Jan. 17. due to the inclement weather.
