A disturbing video showing a puppy being choked by a man in Corpus Christi went viral on social media, catching the attention of authorities.
Thankfully, the pup and other dogs have been taken from the home, and now a criminal case is being worked up.
The video showed a 12-week-old pit bull mix, now named Captain. Captain is in the hands of Corpus Christi's Animal Care Services after the video of him being choked surfaced on social media Monday night.
The Corpus Christi Police Department and Animal Care Services got on the case quickly and went to a judge to secure a court order to seize the pup, and any other animals being kept at the southside home.
"He wasn't there when we seized the dogs, but we did what we needed to," CCPD Capt. Patrick McMenamy said. "We seized the animal and made sure he is safe and where it will be taken care of."
McMenamy said a veterinarian checked out Captain and he seems to be doing fine. He also said Animal Care Services is working with the CCPD's criminal investigations division on the case, which will be sent to the D.A.s office.
So what happens to Captain in the meantime?
"We'll have the puppy until we go to court, along with the other animals and the owner of the dogs, which I don't know if he is a suspect or not," McMenamy said. "We've had other people call us and tell us they own the animals, so whoever the rightful owner is will have to appear in court and answer before the judge as to what happened."
Authorities have not yet released the location of where the animals were being kept, nor have they named a suspect in the case; but they do know that cruelty laws in the State could result in misdemeanor or felony charges being filed.
