Animals at Animal Care Services face overcrowding issue

The facility on Holly Road has 103 kennels with each one being full with some doubled up on smaller dogs.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — An overcrowding issue has Corpus Christi's Animal Care Services facility on Holly Road has sent a plea for help.

For the last two weeks, Animal Care Services kennels have been over capacity.

The staff at the care service is doing everything they can to adopt or foster the animals before the last resort of euthanasia.

"It's not something we want to do, but it's a reality, we all know here in Corpus Christi, we have a large roaming free population," director Mike Gillis said.

The facility on Holly Road has 103 kennels with each one being full with some doubled up on smaller dogs.

When it comes to living release rates, animal control is at 88-percent, which means 88-percent of animals that come in are being adopted or fostered out.

The numbers for animal control are up by 8 percent over the last year, but the shelter is struggling as more dogs and cats coming in during the summer.

I'd like to put a plea out to everybody, if you can adopt, give us a call, we can work out, our rescues need fosters, it's like a virtual kennel it gets the animal out of the shelter environment and into a home for a week or three weeks while we work on placing that animal," Gillis said

Adoption fees are on $25, which includes spay or neuter, vaccinations, microchip, and city tag.

If you are interested in fostering an animal, there is no financial requirement. The city or rescue group will take care of everything from food to vet bills.

The shelter has been having more adoption events and has also expanded their hours to include Sunday's to help clear their kennels.
