Bats back at Refugio Elementary School, school closed again

Notes about the closures were posted on the front doors of the elementary school and the administration building.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Refugio Elementary School has closed again due to a bat infestation that was believed to be solved.

Last Tuesday, the Elementary School was closed after reports of bats being spotted. Refugio ISD got rid of the pests however, they were spotted again during the weekend causing the school to close one more time.

Representatives of an Austin pest control company were able to determine that the bats were nesting and coming from outside through 8 similar spots around the roof from underneath the tin flanges of the brick walls.

When the bats reappeared, the superintendent of schools Melissa Gonzalez said they decided not to take chances and close the school until the additional pest control work is completed but they are hoping to set up provisional locations to hold classes.

Gonzalez also claims that the bats were able to go into the school due to the result of damage caused by hurricane Harvey.

Notes about the closures were posted on the front doors of the elementary school and the administration building.
