CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Officers in Bee County had their hands full Thursday morning when a man who was reportedly under the influence caused thousands of dollars in property damage and had to be subdued with the help of local bystanders.
Anthony Diaz was first spotted at the Fast Break in Pettus, where a Bee County Sheriff's Office social media post reported that a male subject who appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance was stealing beer.
Diaz proceeded to try to take a vehicle, the sheriff's office said, but he then realized he didn't have the keys.
Following this, he walked to a nearby Dairy Queen, forced his way in by breaking the door, and caused more than $30,000 worth of damage, which included broken windows.
At some point, the sheriff's office said Diaz left the restaurant and started swinging a board and a chair at cars driving along Hwy 181. It was then that Lt. Rick Villarreal arrived and saw what Diaz was doing.
Villarreal reportedly ordered Diaz to the ground, but when he refused, Villarreal deployed his pepper spray.
Diaz still did not comply.
He then reportedly approached a stopped vehicle on the highway with a woman and a child inside. Villarreal said Diaz then tried to open the door, but Villarreal used his pepper spray again, forcing Diaz to leave the car.
Villarreal then used his baton to subdue Diaz.
The post states that employees at nearby ConocoPhillips, Diamond G Land Management, and Targa Resources assisted Villarreal in detaining Diaz.
He was later taken to Christus Spohn Hospital for treatment before being released and booked into the Bee County Jail, where he is facing several charges.
