CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Bishop Police Department is currently assisting Nueces County E.S.D 3 Fire and Rescue with traffic control for several brush fires reported in the area of U.S. Highway 77, between County Road 12 and E. 6th Street, per Bishop Police Department.

Kleberg County DA John Hubert told 3NEWS that he responded to multiple fires along the highway, attempting to put some of them out with a shovel.

Hubert said one fire he spotted on Hwy. 77 in East Bishop stretched all the way to Driscoll and it looked like there were more fires to the east of that initial blaze.

"Don't know if it was intentional or somebody has something come off their vehicle like dragging something metal causing spark."

Bishop PD said smoke may cause limited visibility and lane closures may be possible as fire crews work to contain the fires.

There are no risks to nearby structures at this time.

Authorities ask that you please avoid the area and seek alternative routes of travel, if possible.

This is a developing story. Stay with 3NEWS for updates.
