CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Sarah Smith was arrested Wednesday morning after Corpus Christi police officers said she called them asking for help finding shelter for her and her two sons in Nueces County.
Karnes County Sheriff’s Office deputies initially responded to the call for a reported child abduction/custody issue Tuesday evening. Their investigation found that the two children, 12- and 7-year-old boys were in the custody of their guardians under a court order when Smith, their biological mother, took them.
CCPD said they found two active warrants for the 45-year-old mother when they located her and her young sons along Shoreline Drive just before 4:30 a.m.
KCSO said Smith had previously been deemed unfit to have custody of the children by the Nueces County District Court.
She was booked without incident into the Nueces County jail on two counts of interference with child custody after police learned a Karnes County Child Abduction Amber alert was issued for her.
Karnes County was contacted and a guardian for Smith's sons later arrived to take custody of the children. CCPD said they were unharmed and in good health.
